Allen Hatley and Tim Cobb named 2017 Professional Farm Managers of the Year

  • Washington farm managers honored with prestigious industry award
  • Annual award honors excellence in farm management and customer satisfaction
  • Recognition co-sponsored by Syngenta, Farm Journal’s AgPro magazine and the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers

GREENSBORO, N.C., USA - November 16, 2017 – Allen Hatley and Tim Cobb, accredited farm managers, rural appraisers and principal partners of Hatley/Cobb Farmland Management, have received the 2017 Professional Farm Managers of the Year Award. Syngenta, Farm Journal’s AgPro magazine and the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) co-sponsor the annual award honoring farm managers whose dedication and commitment to agriculture have benefited their clients.

Originally Sharp & Hatley, Inc., the company was renamed to Hatley/Cobb Farmland Management in 2014 to reflect new ownership. The firm specializes in farm lease-agreements, custom farming operations, grain and crop marketing, farm property appraisals, long-term farm planning and related services. They manage over 100,000 acres of farmland and currently work with 75 clients. Their dynamic partnership allows them to mix tradition with innovation and provide a unique perspective to help their clients succeed.

Hatley got his start in the industry when he took a job as a farm property manager with the Seattle First National Bank trust department in 1974. He brings a strong sense of tradition to the partnership and has spent the last 40 years gaining clients’ trust by forming meaningful connections with land owners and tenants. While Cobb enjoys learning from Hatley’s experience, Cobb brings a fresh perspective on technology.

“Those that work with us often joke that Tim prefers an iPad while I stick with my legal pad,” said Hatley. “I think that describes our professional relationship perfectly.”

The younger of the two partners, Cobb joined the firm when Hatley’s former business partner, John Sharp, decided to retire. Cobb brought a new, innovative way of thinking to the firm and believes there is a huge opportunity in the farmland management industry, especially in terms of technology.

“We are on the cusp of utilizing technologies that will help us manage better, communicate with our clients better and become more viable as asset managers,” explained Cobb.

Syngenta has sponsored the Professional Farm Manager of the Year Award for 29 years.

“It’s an honor to work with ASFMRA to recognize our country’s best farm managers,” said Brent Rockers, Syngenta district manager. “Farm managers play a crucial role in preserving the heritage of American family farms. They deserve to be celebrated.”

Hatley and Cobb are both honored to receive this award. “On behalf of Hatley/Cobb Farmland Management, we would like to thank Syngenta, Farm Journal’s AgPro magazine and the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers for choosing us to be the 2017 Farm Managers of the Year,” said Cobb. “It is a great honor for both of us; one that we will not forget, and one that we are very grateful for.”
