Gary and Adam's Story

A win-win for retailers and growers

In a private office specifically designed for agronomic advising, Land.db® software is projected on a 50-inch flat screen. Adam Grove, agronomy operations manager and Certified AgriEdge® Partner for Farmers Elevator and Exchange in Monroe City, MO, enters key variables relating to a grower’s farm to test different crop input choices. Meanwhile, the grower intently watches the screen, which shows him the dollars-and-cents impact his seeds, crop protection and other agronomic decisions will have on his farm’s potential crop performance and bottom line.

Gary Carr, agronomy and sales manager at Farmers Elevator and Exchange, says, “With AgriEdge Excelsior®, we went from being a retailer of commodities, such as fertilizer and chemistry, to now, we’re a farm management partner with the customer. That differentiates us from the other retailers in the area. It gives us a chance to be one step ahead of the competition.”

Overhauling operations

Adam works with 18 AgriEdge Excelsior growers whose land represents two-thirds of all the acreage the company services. To make Adam’s job easier, field records from John Deere and Case New Holland machinery flow seamlessly into the growers’ records within the AgriEdge Excelsior software.

In addition to supporting growers who participate in the AgriEdge Excelsior program, Adam handles all the company’s agronomic operations and services through Land.db. This means that even those customers not enrolled in the program benefit because of the company’s improved operational efficiency.

“Every job my operators perform is done through Land.db,” says Adam. “It has become our entire record-keeping system on all chemical and fertilizer orders, as well as the bridge samplings for our variable-rate fertilizer. Every work order we process is done through Land.db.”

In total, Adam has more than 40,000 acres — every field the company has ever serviced — mapped in Land.db. With this approach, the company has simplified its record keeping. Because a computer now analyzes the data and completes the calculations, this system has decreased both the risk of human error and the paperwork operators must fill out every day.

“I think the AgriEdge Excelsior program is a win-win for everybody. It has been a win for us as a retailer. We love the way we use it because we’re trying to get all the benefit we can out of it. It’s the best program like this out there right now,” says Gary Carr, agronomy and sales manager at Farmers Elevator and Exchange.

However, Adam says the biggest benefit of the AgriEdge Excelsior program is the relationship that he builds with the customers. He will help customers evaluate all their farm data in the Land.db system, even if they do not buy it from the store. The Land.db software allows growers to input and evaluate all possible products they could use in their fields, not only Syngenta products.

These growers are committed to their business program because they’ve seen the unbiased ROI that investing in their crop inputs will achieve. Adam says, “Growers in the program have seen the numbers, so they are committed to the plan and comfortable with it. They sleep at night.”

“I am passionate about Syngenta products,” says Gary. “They still have the best chemistries. They still have the best corn hybrids. They have the best crop protection products in the industry. They have seedcare products. They have the whole enchilada. I think the AgriEdge Excelsior program is a win-win for everybody. It has been a win for us as a retailer.
