Aspiring leaders awarded Goldsmith Scholarships from Syngenta Flowers

  • Jackie Wang and Kim Shearer Lattier named 2015 Goldsmith Scholarship winners
  • Each awarded $7,500 for educational pursuits
  • Candidates evaluated on future potential in ornamental horticulture and plant breeding
GILROY, Calif., USA – Syngenta Flowers, Inc. has awarded Jackie Wang the 2015 Goldsmith Seeds Floriculture Business Advancement Scholarship, and Kim Shearer Lattier the 2015 Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship. The awards were presented during a special luncheon held at Syngenta during the California Spring Trials.  Joel Goldsmith, son of Goldsmith Seeds founder Glenn Goldsmith also attended as a special guest. Both students received $7,500 for future educational use.

“The academic and field work that both Jackie and Kim have accomplished made them truly stand out in a very competitive field,” said Scott Valentine, head of Syngenta Flowers. “The applications received this year were of such high quality that selecting the winners was very difficult.”

Wang is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in public horticulture at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo. Her accomplishments in both the classroom and in real-world experiences, particularly in public gardens and plant conservatories, distinguish her as an ideal recipient and identify her as a future industry leader. Wang plans to use the scholarship to continue her undergraduate work.

Shearer Lattier is a graduate student at Oregon State University working toward a master’s degree in horticulture with a focus in plant breeding and genetics.  Previously, she earned two Bachelor of Science degrees from North Carolina State University in horticultural science and plant biology. She is already an accomplished lecturer, researcher and author whose work has helped advance ongoing research at Oregon State University. Shearer Lattier will apply the scholarship to advance her education in the classroom and the field.

This is the fifth year Syngenta Flowers has awarded the Goldsmith scholarships. They are given in honor of Glenn Goldsmith, the founder of Goldsmith Seeds, and the contributions he made to the floriculture industry.
