California wheat growers gain access to versatile variety with new level of performance

Syngenta is introducing a new hard red spring AgriPro® brand wheat seed variety

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., USA, Sept. 1, 2020 – To help wheat growers in California prepare for fall planting, Syngenta is adding a new versatile hard red spring wheat variety to the company’s proven portfolio of AgriPro® brand wheat. AP Octane will be available to purchase as certified seed for the upcoming winter and spring wheat planting seasons.

Wheat is one of the most versatile small grains, which is beneficial to growers when market conditions or weather patterns create a valuable opportunity to harvest for forage or silage rather than grain. California wheat growers in this situation can benefit from AP Octane, which provides excellent green chop and Relative Feed Quality, and serves a dual purpose for either grain or forage.

In 2019 Syngenta trials, AP Octane consistently yielded higher bushels per acre than the average across multiple locations in California.1 Trial results show it is similar in maturity to SY Summit 515 but with improved yield and protein, two important agronomic characteristics for any wheat grower. This new variety also offers excellent tolerance to stripe rust and barley yellow dwarf virus, as well as very good to excellent tolerance to Septoria

“AP Octane is an exciting new variety for growers. It is a versatile variety that serves a dual purpose: forage or grain,” said Riley Hille, key account lead in the Western region for AgriPro. “AgriPro always keeps the needs of the market and the grower in mind. This mindset has helped AgriPro offer the largest portfolio in the wheat industry, complete with varieties that consistently rank in the top yield groups in every region.”

Backed by more than 50 years of wheat breeding expertise, AgriPro brand wheat varieties are consistent top performers that offer best-in-class disease packages, leading agronomics and outstanding yields.
