United Sugar Producers & Refiners

Using Cropwise Sustainability to benchmark and maximize regenerative agricultural practices allows United Sugars to tell the story of food production from sugar beet to sweet treat.

The Challenge

Multiple customers with multiple sustainability needs

Our partner, United Sugar Producers and Refiners (USPR), is the marketing arm of several sugar companies across North America including American Crystal Sugar Cooperative, Minn-Dak Farmers, Wyoming Sugar Company, LLC, and U.S. Sugar.

As a supplier for many different food and consumer packaged goods companies, USPR has seen growing requests for reporting adoption of regenerative agriculture practices and certifications aligned to their production of sugar. Some of USPR’s customers are using the Sustainable Ag Initiative’s (SAI) Farm Sustainability Assessment to report sustainability and regen ag practice adoption.

USPR created its “United We Grow” program to enable alignment between company and grower practices with downstream customer needs.

Making sense of the data and sustainable story

Using Syngenta’s Sustainable Outcomes in Agriculture Standard via the Cropwise™ Sustainability app, USPR has found a quick and easy way for growers to share farm-level data, benchmark performance, and better understand sustainability across their growing regions. This includes ensuring growers are meeting SAI’s FSA 3.0 Gold level equivalency through Cropwise Sustainability. By streamlining the lift for growers, USPR can efficiently deliver customer requests.

The Solution

Syngenta partners with USPR to use Cropwise Sustainability and its benchmark to SAI FSA 3.0 to meet performance requirements from its customers. The aggregate data provides useful insights for continuous improvement. USPR works with its member companies to engage growers to collect farm-level data. This supports USPR’s commitments to their customers. For almost a decade, our partnership with USPR has continued to evolve to the needs of their member companies and customer base.
