Acuron® corn herbicide named Agri Marketing magazine’s 2015 New Product of the Year

  • Innovative product released in 2015 brings a step-change in weed management
  • Features bicyclopyrone, the latest active ingredient from Syngenta, to help farmers combat weed resistance
  • Targets tough weeds, like Palmer amaranth, that current products are missing
GREENSBORO, N.C., USA – Helping farmers control tough and resistant weeds was the motivation behind the development of Acuron® corn herbicide from Syngenta. It’s also a key reason why it has been named Agri Marketing magazine’s 2015 New Product of the Year.

“This is the 18th anniversary of Agri Marketing’s New Product of the Year award, which is given to a product that benefits the marketplace and growers, making their operation more efficient, while improving their bottom line,” said Lynn Henderson, publisher and editorial director of the magazine.

Infestations of tough broadleaf weeds in corn have increased by 50 percent in the last four years, and farmers across the Midwest are seeking new products for better weed control. With four active ingredients, including the latest technology, bicyclopyrone, and three complementary modes of action, Acuron targets more than 70 broadleaf weeds in corn. Its built-in weed-resistance management targets weeds that farmers have found tough to manage with current products.

“Farmers are analyzing their inputs more critically and realizing that if they want to fight resistance, they really need multiple modes of action and robust residual rates that a product like Acuron can provide,” said John Foresman, herbicide product lead at Syngenta. “We developed this herbicide with the farmer in mind, so for it to be named New Product of the Year by Agri Marketing is an honor.”

Henderson said Agri Marketing received numerous nominations, which were submitted to a panel of judges representing several professions within the agricultural industry.

One of the contest judges, David Englund, senior vice president of Farm and Ranch Management with Farmers National Company said, “I was really pleased to see a new chemistry come on board that could help farmers and landowners work on some of the problems they’ve been seeing like weed resistance.”

In over 800 university, Syngenta and distributor trials, bicyclopyrone helped Acuron deliver a higher level of control, more often, than competitive products. After receiving EPA registration in April 2015, Acuron was trialed by growers across the Midwest who frequently cited control of the toughest weeds, long-lasting residual and application flexibility as its most valuable features.

Missouri farmer Brian Buford said, “Acuron did a fantastic job controlling all of our biggest problem weeds and giving the added residual that we needed to achieve season-long control with one pass.”

Stephen Schilz had a similar experience on his farm in Nebraska. “The toughest weeds here in western Nebraska are kochia and foxtail,” Schilz said. “In the past, when I came back and saw those tough weeds still standing after a herbicide application, it was frustrating, especially after spending money to control them. When I applied Acuron corn herbicide, I noticed a big difference.”

David Piñon, communications lead at Syngenta, hopes to build on this enthusiasm and help more farmers adopt effective strategies for weed resistance. “Hundreds of field trials have shown Acuron is a step-change in weed management, because it can dramatically improve a farmer’s efforts in tackling weed resistance,” Piñon said. “Farmers have told us they felt like weeds were laughing at their current corn herbicides. We want farmers to have the last laugh on tough weeds.”

Henderson noted that several years ago, Agri Marketing conducted a survey, which showed the ag industry annually launches an average of 7,000 new products, services and major label changes.

“That makes Syngenta’s winning New Product of the Year for Acuron even more impressive,” he said. “And just as impressive, over the years, Syngenta has won the Product of the Year award three times: in 2003 for Callisto® herbicide, in 2006 for Avicta® Complete Cotton nematicide/insecticide/fungicide seed treatment and in 2014 for Enogen® corn enzyme technology.”
