NK® Soybeans outperform competitor varieties in 2015 and offer high potential for 2016: Missouri and southern Illinois

  • The 2015 growing season provides insight for 2016 variety selection
  • A tough planting season and sudden death syndrome threatened 2015 soybean yields in Missouri and southern Illinois
  • NK® Soybeans performance-class variety out-yielded Pioneer® and Asgrow® varieties by more than 2 bushels per acre in trials in Missouri and Illinois
MINNETONKA, MN, USA – As 2016 planting approaches, Syngenta encourages growers to reflect on the 2015 growing season. Evaluating what positively or negatively affected soybean yields one year provides insight for the next year’s management plans and variety selections.

In 2015, many Missouri and southern Illinois soybean growers experienced a later-than-normal planting season followed by dry weather in July and August. Sudden death syndrome (SDS) and drought stress reduced the crop’s yield potential.

New NK® Soybeans S39-C4 brand was a top performer for many growers with its outstanding standability and excellent SDS and stress resistance. In 2015, NK Soybeans S39-C4 brand out-yielded all Pioneer® varieties by 2.4 bushels per acre (bu/A) and all Asgrow® varieties by 2.2 bu/A in 251 trials in Missouri and southern Illinois. New NK Soybeans S39-C4 brand, along with other proven NK Soybean varieties like S35-C3, S38-W4 and S39-U2 brands, will again be grower favorites for 2016 planting.

“Each year, I plant soybean plots with different seed brands to determine what performs well on our soils,” said Matt Hollingshead, Syngenta representative in Audrain County, Missouri. “NK Soybeans and competitor brands looked pretty similar until we hit a dry spell. That’s when NK Soybeans S39-C4 brand really began to shine, and the yield difference between it and the other brands became apparent.”

The 2016 portfolio of performance-class NK Soybeans comprises varieties ranging from very early Relative Maturity (RM) 0.0009 to late RM 7.6. Developed through the award-winning Y.E.S. Yield Engineering System™, NK Soybean varieties offer elite genetics to cover a wide array of agronomic concerns, allowing growers the opportunity to fully exploit their fields’ yield potential. Proven yield performance aligned with regionally focused defensive packages elevates soybean growers’ potential for a successful 2016 growing season.
